Final letter from Bob McAdams, CCPJ President
Bob McAdams, longtime President of the Charlottesille Center for Peace and Justice, died on February 24 after a long illness. He was active and involved with peace and justice until the very end, writing the following letter on February 20.
"My name is Robert McAdams and my date of birth is 3/25/1946." I have said those
words hundreds of times over three hospital stays while my health is failing. A far
greater concern for me is the health of our democracy, which is in dire peril of ending in an authoritarian state. We must save our democracy. To do so we must protect the
elections in 2026.
Many people look for the upcoming November elections to be a massive rejection by voters of Trump and his administration. Donald Trump deeply fears those elections, and is plotting to disrupt or seize control of them. Trump will use every form of force to prevent his defeat.
Courts act on the facts of an event that has happened or is happening. They apply the
law to those facts in a deliberative process. With the 2026 elections, court action will be too late. Congress alone has the power to act swiftly to prevent a disaster. If Donald Trump threatens to disrupt the 2026 elections in any way, the House of Representatives must vote to impeach.
"If Donald Trump threatens to disrupt the 2026 elections in any way, the House of Representatives must vote to impeach."
Each state in our republic is a sovereign entity, not an agent of a national government. Our constitution explicitly gives states the responsibility to conduct elections through their own counties and local governments. Local people carefully count the ballots and secure them in a chain of custody. This local process keeps the ballots, the votes of the people, as far away as possible from the relentless lust for power in people like Donald Trump.
Therefore, if Donald Trump threatens to use armed force at polling places or threatens
election officials or threatens to tamper with voter rolls or threatens to disrupt the
counting of votes or the chain of custody of the ballots, then the House of
Representatives must vote to impeach Donald Trump, and the Senate must vote to
convict Donald Trump. He has committed a multitude of high crimes, misdemeanors,
and betrayals of his oath of office, which amount to treason against our Republic, the
United States of America. Donald Trump must be removed from office. This is the only
way we can protect the 2026 elections.
Congress has the power of impeachment. I call on this Congress, this year, to act on
this power. I believe that representatives and senators in this Congress will still honor
their own oath of office and from a solemn patriotism vote to impeach, convict, and
remove from office Donald Trump. My deep love for our country drives that belief.
