Description

Dangerous times in Virginia:
Several counties in Virginia have conducted
biased studies of the
impacts of illegal immigration and come to
disturbing conclusions.
- Anti-immigrant legislation in Prince
William County is being looked at as
a model by other local governments.
- The Virginia General Assembly is now
beginning its own study of the
impacts of illegal immigration.
- Among the measures being proposed at the
state government level is the
construction of a new immigrant detention
center.
Exciting times in Virginia:
- In Prince William County, a group called
Mexicanos Sin Fronteras, is
actively organizing against the
anti-immigrant legislation there. Their
labor day weekend march drew a crowd of
over 7,000 people.
- Similar groups are organizing in Loudoun
County, Culpeper,
Charlottesville, Tidewater and others parts
of the state.
- The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors
recently voted in favor of a
positive resolution regarding the impacts
of immigrants in the county.
Together We Can Create Change
Come to Charlottesville and spend a day
talking and working with others
who are concerned with justice for
immigrants. During our time together we
will:
- Hear reports on what groups are doing
around the state.
- Get an update on immigrant legislation at
local, state and national
levels
- Decide how to work together during the
year to come.
By coordinating our efforts, we can
increase our impact on the Virginia
General Assembly, better prepare ourselves
to address federal immigration
reform,
and show people across the state the many
positive contributions that
immigrants make to life in Virginia.
The people, united will never be defeated!
