Description

Join Miss Representation and friends for a COLUMBUS DAY PROTEST at the Lewis & Clark & Sacagawea statue from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. We have constructed tall banners that will hide the statue.

Coincidentally it is almost the 10-year anniversary of the last protest there (the Education Liberation Rally) by 2 women's groups who saw the statue as the epitome of the "underrepresentation and misrepresentation of women and minorities throughout history." Rally organizers successfully championed legislation in the Virginia General Assembly requiring a curriculum in the public schools that fully incorporates the perspective of different cultures and women.

Although Miss Representation and her fellow beauty queens are pursuing the limited and local goal of having the statue properly contextualized when the intersection is revamped, we welcome and encourage others who have something to say about this issue, or more generally, the way that history is taught and represented in our culture in order to protest the celebration of Columbus Day itself. If you plan on participating, please let me know and let me know if you would like to make a sign or come dressed like a beauty queen. You can't have enough of these, I've found.

Please forward this to other folks who would want to know.

Love,
Miss Representation (aka Jennifer Tidwell)
